Radiation Therapy Workflow

What to Expect From Consultation to Completion

At Radiant Cancer Care, we understand that starting radiation therapy can feel overwhelming. That’s why we’ve created a clear, step-by-step workflow to help guide you through the entire process—from your initial visit to your final treatment.

1. Initial Consultation

Your care begins with a one-on-one visit with a board-certified radiation oncologist. During this appointment, we will:

  • Review your diagnosis and medical history

  • Go over any prior imaging or pathology reports

  • Explain how radiation therapy may help in your case

  • Answer all of your questions in a compassionate, easy-to-understand manner

If radiation is the right path for you, we’ll begin designing your treatment plan right away.

2. Simulation (Treatment Planning)

Once you decide to move forward, you’ll undergo a simulation session—a specialized CT scan that maps your anatomy for treatment purposes. During this session:

  • You’ll be positioned on a treatment table similar to the one used during actual therapy

  • Custom immobilization devices may be created to help you stay still and comfortable

  • Advanced imaging (such as MRI or PET) may be fused with the CT for greater accuracy

This scan is the blueprint for your personalized radiation plan.

3. Treatment Planning & Dosimetry

Using the simulation data, our medical physicists and dosimetrists work closely with your radiation oncologist to create a custom radiation plan that:

  • Targets the tumor with sub-millimeter precision

  • Protects surrounding healthy tissue and organs

  • Delivers an effective dose based on your condition and treatment goals

This behind-the-scenes phase is critical and may take several days to complete.

4. Verification (Quality Assurance)

Before your first treatment, our team performs multiple quality checks to:

  • Validate all technical parameters of your plan

  • Test delivery accuracy on our machines

  • Ensure everything is safe, effective, and customized to your body

This process is part of our commitment to precision and safety.

5. Treatment Delivery

You’ll return for your daily or weekly treatment sessions, depending on your plan. Each session is:

  • Non-invasive and painless

  • Typically 10–30 minutes, including setup time

  • Supervised by certified radiation therapists with real-time imaging

Most patients are in and out the same day with no recovery time needed.

6. Weekly On-Treatment Visits

During your course of therapy, you’ll meet weekly with your radiation oncologist to:

  • Monitor side effects and symptom relief

  • Adjust treatment as needed

  • Answer any questions and offer support

Your care is dynamic and responsive to your needs every step of the way.

7. Follow-Up & Survivorship

After your treatment course is complete, we’ll schedule follow-up appointments to:

  • Monitor your recovery and long-term results

  • Manage any late side effects

  • Coordinate with your other specialists as needed

We remain part of your care team long after treatment ends.
